Dr. Harshawardhan Mardikar, MD, DM, DNB, FSCAI, FACC, is the Director of Spandan Heart Institute & Research Center in Nagpur (spandanheart.com).
He completed his medical degree at Government Medical College & Hospital in Nagpur and earned his MD in Internal Medicine with 4 gold medals. He then obtained his DM in Cardiology from Mumbai University and his DNB in Cardiology in 1993.
Dr. Mardikar’s career began with a five-year stint as an Assistant Professor of Cardiology at LTMG Hospital in Sion, Bombay. In 1998, he returned to Nagpur as an Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology at the Medical Post Graduate Institute and Super Specialty Hospital, a significant initiative by the Government of Maharashtra aimed at providing top-notch cardiac care in Central India. Subsequently Dr Mardikar started his own single speciality hospital of cardiology ie. Spandan Heart Institute & Research centre.
In 2001, in collaboration with other Indian doctors, Dr. Mardikar established the Cardiovascular Society of India. The society aims to advance medical education in all areas of cardiovascular medicine, particularly through the Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) conferences. These conferences have become a significant event for many physicians and cardiologists across India, offering high-quality scientific content and insights from leading national and international experts. By 2008, CAD conferences had expanded internationally, forming alliances with institutions such as the University of Cape Town in South Africa, the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and Imperial College London.
Dr. Mardikar has numerous publications in indexed journals and has received various awards and recognitions from both medical and non-medical sectors. He has been a faculty member at national and international conferences, including CSI, National PTCA registry, API, the European Society of Cardiology, and Euro-PCR. He is a Fellow of The Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI) and The American College of Cardiology (FACC). He served as the Chairman of the National Intervention Council in 2010 and 2011 and was elected as Vice-President of the Cardiological Society of India for a two-year term twice.
